Why is my AC leaking water inside? And how to fix it.

This is an issue that I, myself dealt with very recently. I could hear the telltale ‘drip drip drip’ of water but had no idea where it was coming from. Fast forward, the next thing I know I’m getting a call from my leasing office telling me that the water leaked downstairs! Luckily maintenance was able to fix it, but I felt horrible. Turns out that water leakage is a common problem with ACs, particularly window or wall units. Happys Appliances Outlet can offer you some tips and advice when you need it!

So why is my AC leaking?

Anytime you notice water, where it’s not supposed to be, is a cause for concern. When you notice water near your AC, that concern doubles. But just what is causing it to leak water into your home? Well, thankfully there are some simple problems that are common. Clogged drain lines, drain pan issues, clogged air filters, and low refrigerant are the most common issues. Thankfully they’re also fairly easy to diagnose and repair.

How to fix the leakage?

While you’ll be able to fix most, if not all of these problems yourself, it may prove far more prudent to call in a repair technician. They know what they’re doing and can figure out what’s wrong much faster. If you’re bound and determined to do it yourself, just make sure to take precautions, which means having two or more people help you move a window unit out so that you can look at the whole thing. For clogged condensate lines, you’ll need to use a wet/dry vac to remove whatever is clogging it, be it debris, algae, or built-up gunk. I’d really suggest going with an HVAC professional. For drain pan issues, it’s a little easier to repair. Drain pans can get dirty or rusty and cause backflow into your home. You can either clean it or replace. Clogged/dirty air filters are another easy fix. All you need to do is clean them or replace them and you’ll be good to go! Low refrigerant is going to be a real issue because it’s a precursor to a much bigger problem. You’re likely looking at a leak that will either be repairable or not. If it is, a sealant should do the trick…if not…well you’re looking at a total replacement.

Conclusion

Water leaking from your AC into your home is something that you need to have addressed immediately. It’s not going to go away on its own and will definitely cause more issues the longer it’s left unacknowledged. I got away lucky, all that I needed to have done was a quick clean of the drain pan. Don’t wait to address water leakage and AC issues! You’ll forever be grateful that you didn’t.
