Tips To Achieve A Clutter-Free Countertop

Last week we gave you some easy and affordable ways to make your kitchen instantly feel luxurious. One of these tips is to keep your countertops completely clear of any clutter, or really, anything. Bare countertops may be a bit over the top but do consider how stressed and overwhelmed clutter can make you. Countertops that are already storing a microwave, coffee maker, coffee mugs, dish rack, utensil holder, and a fruit basket can quickly become complete disarray thanks to a rushed morning of breakfast dishes and school lunches. Whether you want your home to feel more luxurious or just more functional, a cluttered kitchen is never going to feel great. Decluttering your countertops is a great first-move to get your kitchen looking its best (and help you feeling your best as well!).

The Goal

Trust us, this isn’t a rant about becoming a minimalist and throwing everything away. The goal here is to make your kitchen looking great and functioning its best, which can be achieved by giving each of your items a place of its own and ensuring it’s the best place possible.

Remove What Doesn’t Belong

The items that occupy your countertops fit into one of three categories; does not belong in the kitchen, belongs in the kitchen but not on your countertops, and lastly, belongs in the kitchen and on your countertops. Start decluttering your countertops by determining which items do not even belong in the kitchen and remove them right away. These items may be today’s mail or your child’s school books that belong in his/her backpack.

Put Up What Does Belong

Certain items belong in the kitchen but not necessarily on your countertops. This can be as easy as determining that grocery bags which clearly should be put away. Other items, however, can be more difficult in deciding whether they belong or not, such as small appliances you use but only a few times a month. That oversized mixer is great for baking cookies during the Holidays but isn’t required to be immediately accessible the rest of the year. The goal here is to find a better place to store your things, either a cupboard or pantry.

Move Microwave Up or Down

Your microwave may be a valuable part of your cooking routine, especially with new features such as steam and convection cooking. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to take up valuable real estate on your countertops. Save countertop space by integrating your microwave into lower cabinetry or placing it above your range. Innovative microwaves like the Whirlpool Low Profile Microwave can now be installed in place of your existing vent hood without losing precious cabinetry space.

Use Your Drawers & Cupboards Wisely

Just because there are certain utensils you use regularly, such as spatulas, doesn’t mean you need fifteen of them out at all times. Instead of storing them on your countertops, keep most of them in an organized drawer and leave a couple out for easy access. Items stored in cupboards should be easy to access so if you’re having to fill your cupboards to the brim in order to give yourself some space on your countertops, you may have too much stuff and some items need to be thrown out. With all that said, it’s also important to allow yourself one junk drawer with a drawer organizer for those little random items that would take too much energy finding a place for.

Now that everything has a place, keeping your countertops clutter-free should be easy. Simply follow the “Don’t put it down, put it away” mantra by putting your items where they belong instead of just putting them down on the counter and you can enjoy your beautiful countertops all year-round!
