Life Expectancy of Appliances in 2019

When you’re purchasing appliances for your home, there’s bound to be some major questions that weigh heavily on your mind. One of the questions you’re going to want an answer for is “how long is this appliance going to last me?” Even with manufacturer warranties like we offer at Happys Appliances Outlet, it’s nice to have a rough idea of how long you’ll be able to use the item that you’ve purchased. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the average life expectancies of household appliances in the year 2019.

Range Ovens

There is a bit of a gap in the expected lifespans of gas and electric ranges. An electric stove has an average life expectancy of 13 years, while gas stoves typically operate functionally for 15 years. While this two year gap in life expectancy likely won’t be a deciding factor in whether you choose to install a gas or electric range, it’s still helpful to be able to plan and budget accordingly for when you’ll need to replace it. If you’ve had your range for longer than you can remember and the igniters begin to fail, that’s probably a good sign that it’s time for a replacement.

Refrigerator

Fridges are frequently the priciest appliance in people’s kitchens. While our stores carry some beautiful full-size refrigerators for under $400, those with expensive taste may be more inclined to treat themselves to a fancy state of the art fridge priced in the thousands. If that sounds like you, you’ll want to ensure this investment is going to last you a long time. Much like gas ranges, refrigerators last for 15 years on average. If you think your fridge might be giving out, try putting a thermometer inside of it for five minutes with the doors closed. If the thermostat reads higher than 45 degrees, it may be time to replace your fridge.

Washer and Dryer

The life expectancy of washers and dryers is a bit harder to pinpoint. The average lifespan of both appliances is eight to twelve years. To preserve your washer and dryers’ lifespans, make sure you’re regularly cleaning out your lint trap. It’s also helpful to clean their hoses, heating element and dryer ducts once every year.

Hot Water Heater

Both gas and electric hot water heaters should last somewhere between seven and ten years. To help extend its life cycle, drain a quarter of water from the tank every 3 months. This helps to remove sediment that builds up in the water from minerals. Doing this allows the water to heat up faster, thereby improving the tank’s efficiency over time.
