Impact of Not Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

Thu Jan 13 2022

Sleep is an important factor in anyone’s life. It helps the body recharge, the mind stays fresh, and more importantly, it helps you relax.

That comfort is definitely the most important part, and making sure that comfort is maximized is in everyone’s benefit. Having a good supportive pillow, a mattress that suits your sleeping needs, all play factors in having a good night's sleep!

However, what are the impacts on a person if those factors aren’t taken care of properly?

Generally, most adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of rest for the body to fully recharge. This allows the body and mind to stay alert and be ready for the day. When someone doesn’t hit these hours, or spends the night tossing and turning or waking up randomly from an uncomfortable mattress or environment, this can lead to long-term and short-term problems.

    Short Term Problems can include:

    - Lack of Alertness. This can pertain to being able to monitor your driving, seeing what's happening around you in your environment.

    - Impaired Memory. Remembering and processing information, especially at a job, can be the difference between a productive day, or an angry boss.

    - Ability to participate in activities. A lack of sleep can leave you feeling more tired sometimes, and this may sabotage your ability to even want to be productive or exercise.

    Long Term Problems can include:

    - Weakened Immunity. Little sleep can cause your immune system to not perform up to par, causing you to get sicker.

    - High Blood Pressure. Sleeping less than five to seven hours a night can put you at risk for elevated blood pressure levels.

    - Poor Balance. Lack of sleep can exhibit your coordination when standing or moving, leaving you more prone to an accident that could lead to something worse.

Ultimately then, we find that making sure your hours of sleep, as well as proper sleeping arrangements, are necessary to keep yourself feeling good and ready! Make sure you get that proper pillow for your neck, and the proper mattress for your back, to keep yourself in tip top shape!
