Refrigerator Organization Tips

While you may think that it doesn’t matter where you decide to store certain items in your fridge, this is actually not the case. The temperature actually varies in different areas inside of your refrigerator, so deciding where to place your food and beverages is actually very important in terms of keeping them fresh. In this blog, we’ll cover all the different areas inside of your fridge, so that when you pick your new refrigerator up from Happys you’ll know how to organize its contents in the most efficient way possible!

The Doors

Most refrigerators feature compartments on the inside of the door(s). While they’re super convenient storage spaces, most of them don’t maintain a consistent temperature. For this reason, you should avoid storing perishable items like eggs and milk in the door compartments. Instead, store condiments, dressings and other items that will not expire for a very long time here.

The Shelves

If your refrigerator has three shelves, they are going to descend from least cold up top, to coldest on the bottom. So, you should store foods that don’t need extra frigid temperatures on the top shelf, such as already-cooked foods and leftovers. The middle shelf is the most temperature consistent, so it’s a good place for items such as eggs and drinks. The bottom shelf is the coldest, so placing perishable dairy products such as milk and yogurt here will extend their lifespan. Be careful though, placing foods with high water content such as fruits on this shelf can freeze and ruin them!

Drawers

Refrigerator drawers are best utilized for storing meat and vegetables, but be sure to keep them separated. You don’t want to cross contaminate your vegetables. Veggies tend to need a more humid environment than fruit, which is why fruits are not included in this storage area. If you have a third drawer, they’re also often a great place for storing cheeses.
