Organize Your Laundry Room

What does your laundry room look like? If those very words made me you cringe a bit, you’re not alone. Maybe your laundry room is more like a laundry closet, takes up a corner in the garage, or is actually in a large space but buried under an equally large mess. Either way, there is no doubt a lot of work gets done in these spaces. Regardless of the size of your laundry room, getting it properly organized can add functionality and efficiency to your favorite (yeah right) chore.

Cabinets/Shelves

From detergents and fabric softeners to special treatment sprays and OxiClean, there are a lot of accessories necessary for cleaning laundry. If you don’t already have cabinets or shelves in your laundry room, the time to add them is yesterday. The best place to hang them is above the washer and dryer if possible. Another alternative to storing your items is inside built-in cabinets under your top-load pair or pedestals underneath your front load pair.

The Functional Shelf

The space between your laundry pair and the hanging cabinets/shelves is the perfect place for a functioning shelf. This open-shelf offers a place for you to keep your most-used items for easy accessibility, including detergents and softeners, stain removers, dryer sheets, and a small bucket to quickly throw lint away in. Hang a shallow shelf above your top-load washer and dryer or a much deeper shelf above your front-load appliances that doubles as a folding table.

Drying Racks

Hanging your clothes to dry is environmentally friendly and can save you some money in the long-run. Since this does add more work to your laundry routine, a drying rack in your laundry room is the perfect solution. Plus with all of the creative solutions to the actual form of the drying rack, you don’t actually need a lot of space to make this happen. Just check out Pinterest to see how you can hang a rack that folds up and down, add a rod between cabinets, suspend an older ladder, and so much more.

A Creative Clothes Sorter

Hopefully, you know it’s always best to separate your clothes based on fabrics and colors so they can receive the correct wash treatment. Instead of sorting through huge piles of dirty clothes, sort them the moment they see the laundry room. Simplify your life with a laundry sorter that dedicates areas for towels, whites, darks, delicate fabrics, and so on. Again, there are a lot of creative solutions from canvas bags, cute baskets, storage bins, and many more.

A Place For The Pocket Stuff

Everything can have a place in your laundry room, from loose change from a pocket or a sock that recently became single. Use small buckets or bins on your new functional shelf to easily throw away mess lint, hold onto change for the vending machine, or store single socks until their true loves return.

Detergent Dispensers

While buying detergents and fabric softeners in bulk will save you money, it can make each load that much more difficult if you’re having to lift a 20 lb. bottle just to pour a few tablespoons into a cup. Avoid the strain and mess by filling up some large mason jars or beverage dispensers with enough detergent, fabric softener, or even bleach for a few weeks. This creative solution can also add a beautiful touch to your laundry room if bright green and orange plastic bottles aren’t your thing.
