Increase Laundry Efficiency, Not Work

What’s your least favorite household chore? We’re going to go ahead and guess it’s between the dishes and the laundry. While no chore is fun, these two seem never-ending. The moment you think you have the laundry done, someone walks in with a dirty soccer uniform, a stack of work clothes, a white towel, and those items that only make an appearance the moment you pat yourself on the back. Laundry is not only not fun, it also uses a lot of energy (not just electricity, but also yours). Use these eco-friendly tips to increase your laundry efficiency and reduce energy used!

Upgrade Your Old Washer

Technology has come a long way in energy-efficiency which means that no matter the age of your older washer, it automatically gets placed in the category of not being as efficient as it could be. If your washer is an older top-loader, you could be using twice as much water and energy than a newer model. Most top name brands, like Whirlpool and Maytag, offer HE washers that use half the amount of water while still making your clothes brighter and cleaner so you never have to sacrifice.

Wear More, Wash Less

Just because you wore a piece of clothing once doesn’t mean it automatically has to be washed right away. Recent studies show that certain clothing items can be worn more than once before being tossed into the washer. While shirts should be washed every wear, dress pants only need to be washed every 3 wears, sheets every week, and bathrobe once a month. You can even skip the washer entirely and just toss unsoiled jeans into the freezer to kill any bacteria (yes, it’s a thing). By wearing your clothes more times before washing them, you’ll majorly reduce your laundry load while saving energy and water.

Fill It To The Max

Washing just a few items at a time is like flushing money down the drain (pun intended). Instead, fill each load as per the washer’s maximum recommendations will reduce water and energy used per clothing item. If you want to avoid mixing whites with darks, just simply wait longer in between loads until you have enough for a large load (like you even need an excuse to not do laundry). Just be sure not to overpack your washer as this can reduce its cleaning ability.

Choose The Correct Cycle

Just like you don’t throw in a chiffon dress with a load of oil-stained mechanic jumpsuits, you also don’t need to wash all clothes on a normal setting of hot water. In fact, studies have shown that cold water can clean just as effectively as hot water and can be used for sweaters, denim, and even delicates. Cold water can also help protect dark and bright colors from running. Warm water is actually a better option for lights and whites while hot water is best for removing stains and disinfecting towels.
