How to Select the Right Mattress for You!

1.6.23

Mattresses are like appliances, they come in all different varieties that allow the common person the ability to pick something that is right for them!

Knowing how to pick your mattress is the difference between sleeping better at night or choosing to sleep on the couch and waking up the next morning with a bad back. Price range is a big factor in buying anything these days, but sometimes going up a price point might make the difference between longevity or going back to the store in five years. Regardless, here’s our method to picking the right mattress for you!

Step 1: Structure and Price Point

It’s no surprise that mattresses, especially the really upscale ones, can be pretty expensive. However, these high price points always come with better quality, features, and longevity. It’s important to determine what price point fits your budget, but also not picking the cheapest option in the bunch.

Mattresses come in different foundations and materials.

Innersprings, which is the most traditional mattress form, feature a coil along with a thin layer of cushioning. These coils can sometimes come encased in a foam, providing more comfort and less ability to feel the coil. Hybrids, which are a mix of innerspring and memory foam, can also have the same type of foundation.

Memory foam mattresses are another kind, allowing better sleep for couples, as memory foam reduces the energy from movements within the mattress, which allows those movements to not impact the other person. This can be a little iffy with some people, as memory foam is usually much softer and conforms to your body, which could be a down point for someone that wants a mattress a little more firm.

Pillow-Tops can come in a hybrid, memory foam, or innerspring configuration, and just add another soft layer of material to make it a bit more plushy and comfortable.

Step 2: Mattress Size

Every person is different and every size suits some people better than others. Your home and how your room is set up also impact this decision, so it’s important to measure your space and your doorways to make sure your mattress can get in! The standard sizes of a mattress are a Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cali King.

If you’re sleeping with a partner, we suggest a Full, Queen, or King, especially a King if you like to spread out, otherwise for a single sleeper or a teenager/child, a Twin, Twin XL, or a Full will be perfect!

Step 3: Sleeping Position and Firmness

Everyone sleeps differently, some on their backs, some on their sides, and some on their stomachs. Some mattresses aren’t perfect for stomach sleepers but might be better for back sleepers.

If you’re a back sleeper, you’d want something a little firmer, but not too firm, so your body doesn’t sink in causing back pain.

Side sleepers usually should go for something a little softer to provide equal distribution of pressure.

Stomach sleepers and combination sleepers should aim for something that is smack dab in the middle between a firm and a soft from like a 6 to 7 firmness scale, so they can get the best of both worlds.

With these three steps, anyone can make an accurate judgment as to what mattress fits their needs and their style. It can be a hard choice buying a mattress, but our salesman suggests these steps to finding what's best for you. Take your time, and good luck!
