How to Keep Your Dryer Functioning

Consumers report their dissatisfaction with clothes dryers more than most other appliances. This is because damp clothes are extra noticeable and inconvenient. However, in most cases, it’s not the dryer’s fault. In fact, your clothes drying habits may be contributing to your dryer’s decline in efficiency. In this blog, we’ll look at some behaviors you can correct to keep your brand new dryer from Happys Appliances Outlet working to perfection for many years to come!

Use Less Dryer Sheets and Fabric Softeners

This tip may be a bummer for some of you to hear. I mean, who doesn’t want their clothes to be as soft and sweet-smelling as possible? Unfortunately, these products contain excessive chemical compounds that coat the inside of the dryer drum, moisture sensors, vent system, and lint screen. In order to combat this from happening, choose between using dryer sheets OR fabric softener – not both. Once you’ve done that, only use one dryer sheet or the correct amount of softener.

Empty Lint Screen After Each Use

This may seem like a no brainer to some, but many young people are not aware of how important this step is. Others just forget to do it. At any rate, failing to clean your dryer’s lint trap prohibits proper air movement. This leads to damp clothes, longer drying cycles, linty clothes and even the risk of fire. Emptying a lint screen is pretty simple and self-explanatory, but if you run into any issues, refer to your dryer’s owner’s manual for detailed instructions.

Don’t Overload the Machine

We know the urge to get all of your laundry done in one big load can be particularly strong. However, cramming too many items into your dryer can lead to many of the same unintended consequences as not emptying the lint screen (damp clothes, longer drying cycles, linty clothes and risk of fire.) As a rule of thumb, never fill your dryer’s drum past half way. This will allow your clothes to drop while tumbling, which allows warm air to get into your clothes’ fabrics.

Inspect Hose Periodically

If your laundry habits are top notch but your dryer still isn’t working properly, check the hose for any visible issues. The dryer’s hose is frequently the reason behind longer dry times and wet articles of clothing. Check and make sure that the hose isn’t kinked or collapsed, and that it’s still connected to the vent duct on your wall. You should clean out your dryer’s vent system at least once each year.
