How to Fix a Smelly Fridge

There’s nothing worse than a smelly refrigerator. Odors emanating from the place where you store your fresh food will make your living space less enjoyable for guests and might negatively impact the way they view your hygiene. The worst part about it is how difficult it is to track down the source of the odor! This is why Happys Appliances Outlet has decided to share some helpful tips on getting rid of harsh smells coming from your refrigerator.

Empty Out The Fridge

Even if you think you’ve identified the food item that is causing the smell, you still need to remove all of the other food just in case. If you have a back-up refrigerator, store your perishable foods in there. If a power outage is the reason for the odor, be sure to throw out all of your food because it may be spoiled.

Clean Bins and Shelves

The next thing you will want to do is remove the shelves and bins and wash them in the sink with hot soapy water. This will remove any built up gunk and residue that may be causing the smell. If this doesn’t quite do the trick, try cleaning them with liquid chlorine bleach. After you’ve done that, rinse them in regular water and then let them dry.

Let it Air Out

The last step requires a bit of patience. You’ll need to unplug the fridge, leave the door open and let it air out for 24 hours. This is why having a second refrigerator in your garage or elsewhere comes in handy. If the smell persists after this final step, it may be time to invest in a new refrigerator!
