How do you clean fridge coils?

Well my good friends, that honestly depends on where they’re located on your fridge. Or if your fridge even has them! Most, if not all appliance places–like Happys Appliances Outlet–will carry some refrigerators that have condenser coils. And for those of you who are wondering what condenser coils are, well they are where the heat is removed from the refrigerant that flows through your product! Before we go any farther, you gotta know where the coils are located–they can be on the bottom front, the back, or the top. So without further ado, I’m gonna give you the rundown on how to clean the coils on your fridge.

Bottom Coil Fridges

If you have a bottom coil fridge, you’re gonna want to follow these steps! Before anything please, please unplug your fridge! You risk getting shocked if you leave it plugged in and powered up. With that done, you need to remove the grill base if your fridge is one of those that have them. Use your coil brush to insert it and begin the cleaning process. Really this shouldn’t take more than 5 or 6 minutes. After you’ve thoroughly cleaned it, vacuum up the extra hair, dust, etc. on the floor. Replace the grill base and voila! You can now plug in your fridge again!

Back Coil Fridges

This will take a little more work than if you have a bottom coil fridge. Make sure to clear everything away from your fridge AND unplug it, so that you’ll be able to slide it out and turn it around. Once you do that and you have your fridge turned around you’ll need to locate where your coils are. Sometimes they’re all along the back and sometimes they’re on the bottom part. Once you’ve located them go ahead and clean them as needed with your coil brush. After that vacuum up any leftover debris, plug it back in and move it back to its spot! Note: Use two people if you need to!

Top Coil Fridge

This one is probably the most complicated by far. If you have a fridge that has coils on the top you’re going to have to disconnect the power at the circuit breaker/fuse box before you do anything else. It’s better to be safe than risk getting the shock of your life. After that’s done, make sure that you have a long sleeved shirt on AND gloves. This is for your safety because the fins on the condenser coils in these have sharp edges. The coils are located in a very specific place–at the very back of the machine compartment and behind and to the right of the compressor. Reach through the middle of the compartment and gently clean the coils with your brush. After, use a vacuum with a hose to rid it of the dirt and dust left behind. Close everything and reconnect the power at your circuit breaker/fuse box!

Conclusion

Whatever kind you have, it’s super important that you clean the coils routinely. It is so, so, SO important for the longevity of your appliance. Just remember to take precautions and have some fun while you’re doing something kinda boring!
